Top 10 Skills – Food Stores and Preserving food

 Top Ten Survival Skills #9

Food stores & Preserving Food

Your daily chores for wilderness survival will include fish and meat on linehunting, trapping and snaring your food. Once you have enough food you will need to think about your Food Stores and also Preserving Food to eat later.

In a disaster or long term survival situation storing food is very necessary, especially over the winter months.

The longer you are forced to survive, the more you will need these skills

As you become more skilled at hunting and trapping your food, it is a natural progression to begin food stores and preserving food – there are times when you can find an abundance of foods and other times when the land is bare and food is far more harder to come across. These times must be considered.

It therefore makes sense to try and preserve and store as much of that food as you can when its in abundance.

You must prepare for the lean times.

Sometimes it may not be possible to even hunt for your food. When this happens you must have the survival skills to preserve and store the foods that you have caught in the good times of the year.

Building up a supply of food for the ‘bad’ times of the year is essential survival skill.

There are also many other ways to increase the life of your food and make your food safe as well – we all know the beauty of MRE’s  and Dehydrated Meals with their lifespan of up to 25 years in some cases.

This is definitely something we should consider stocking up with and preparing for survival

They will help you if the going gets tough be a good standby  through any hard times, but learning how to naturally preserve your food will help you for ever.

Of course, for survival, it is important to be preserving your own foods in the home – you can make cost effective food stores that have a good shelf life, in your own kitchen, right now – and you should be doing this as practice for a real situation as well as helping you to build up your food supplies.

One of the most effective methods is to use a Food Dehydrator, like the one shown one the left.

If you then combine that with a Vacuum Sealer, you will have the perfect combination to give an excellent supply of food with minimal storage space.
